Pastor Killed

Oklahoma Pastor Slain In “Horrific” Scene By Associated Press August 26, 2009 8:13 am The scene inside a small Pentecostal churchwhere a pastor was slain was “horrific,” an Oklahoma district attorneysaid Tuesday, calling it the most brutal he has seen in nearly 20 years as a prosecutor. Police have released scant information about the killing of 61-year-old Carol Daniels, whose body was found Sunday inside the Christ Holy Sanctified Church, a weather-beaten building on a rundown block near downtown Anadarko. A preliminary autopsy deemed Daniels’ death a homicide caused by “multiple sharp force injuries,” said Cherokee Ballard, spokeswoman for the state Medical Examiner’s office. She declined to discuss further details. “I’ve prosecuted over 50 murders,” District Attorney Bret Burns said. “This is the most horrific crime scene I’ve ever witnessed.” He declined to elaborate, saying he did not want to jeopardize the investigation. With little official word on the grisly killing, rumors in the town were swirling as people wondered what motivated the crime and who was responsible. Burns has called for a meeting of local pastors on Wednesday. State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown also would not say anything about the time of Daniels’ death, a possible motive or what evidence was collected at the scene. Authorities do not have any suspects, she said, and were offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. “Right now we have more questions than answers,” Brown said. “The few answers we do have, we want to hold on to. That might help us in the long run.” Daniels made the 60-mile trek from Oklahoma City every week to preach, even though the church had no regular congregation. Ezra Randle, Oklahoma overseer for the Christ Holy Sanctified Church, said Daniels had been traveling to Anadarko for four or five years and 85 percent of the time, she made the trip alone. “I tried to ask her why she kept doing it and she would say until God releases me, I will go down there,” said Randle, pastor of Grace Temple Christ Holy Sanctified Church in Elk City. Icey Simmons, 85, a resident of the Silver Crest Nursing Center, said she would see Daniels nearly every weekend when Simmons would go to the church for Sunday service or when Daniels would drop by. “She and I would just go down there and pray by ourselves,” she said. “I can’t believe it. “She was just as sweet as she could be, never did anything to hurt nobody.” Pastor Steve Palczynsky of the Cedar Hill Church of God in Anadarko said lack of official word is disconcerting and that he’s taken extra steps to make sure his church is secure. “The first thing I thought about, being human, was that maybe it was a serial killer and maybe he has something out for preachers, but the Lord takes care of us,” he said. Tracy Schumpert, pastor of the town’s First United Methodist Church, said members of the local clergy will meet Wednesday with Burns to discuss the case. “It’s still very new, and we don’t know what to think,” she said. “Anything that happens like that, it’s a community concern.”

Opinion: Do Black Men Like Their Women Larger?

By Hello Beautiful August 27, 2009 4:52 pm (from thegrio.com)

I posed this question on a social networking site recently. The aftermath was like watching people running from a burning building as if their hair were on fire. Most of the responses were of the “good luck with that” variety, as if the next move was to wait for a last minute pardon from the governor before the firing squad commenced to carry out the sentence.

The reason for some of my own hesitation in weighing in on a subject like this is obvious. Just as the black women come in a variety of hues and hair types, they also are a mix of skinny and voluptuous – the thin and the thick – not so easily or quickly defined. Nor can the dating or marrying preferences of African-American men be easily placed into a nice neat box.

Poll a brother on the street and he might be just as likely to prefer a slim sister as one with, as they say, some junk in her trunk. Serena Williams: “My Thighs Are Too Big” Still, there’s no question that the average African-American woman is likely to adopt India.Arie’s credo that she just “ain’t built like a supermodel.” And if the biggest part of sexiness is self-confidence, then the black woman’s allure to the black man needs no explanation. The black woman exudes self-assuredness. Since her arrival here from Africa centuries ago, the black woman has been comfortable in her skin, content to live her life large, usually more literally than figuratively.

In many cases, because the African-American woman bore the responsibility – often alone – for keeping her family intact, she had little time to take care of herself. Even if that lifestyle wasn’t – or nowadays, isn’t – a choice, we’re nonetheless seeing the effects in higher reported incidents of obesity and related complications, including diabetes and heart disease, within the black community. This week’s news that the American Heart Association added sugar, along with salt and cholesterol, to the list of things to watch out for will not go over well in many black kitchens. While there are legitimate health reasons for wondering if bigger is really better over the long term, those concerns haven’t kept many black women from straying from the ideal European-American body aesthetic that is widely portrayed in the media circles. You need only look at the way two of the world’s top female tennis players, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, are viewed to get a feel for the chasm of difference in how body beauty is perceived in the black and white communities. Sharapova, a Russian émigré and winner of three Grand Slam singles titles, is 6-foot-2, thin and blonde. Twice, she was the most searched for athlete in the world through Yahoo! and she is a favorite of the overwhelmingly white fanboy sports blogosphere. Williams is likewise tall, at 5ft 10″, but as author Marita Golden points out in her book, “Don’t Play in the Sun: One Woman’s Journey Through the Color Complex,” “Serena is compact, muscular [and] built for the game she dominates.”

“And,” continues Golden, “any discussion of Serena Williams has to begin with her backside, her black, her African, derriere. That’s my backside, that’s the backside of so many black women, and Serena ain’t trying to hide it, camouflage it or do anything but flaunt it.” Serena’s not alone, nor should she be. You won’t catch women like Tyra Banks or Oprah Winfrey or Queen Latifah squeezing into size 2 or 4 dresses. Yet their visibility and beauty are unquestioned. Indeed, I appreciate the fact that my wife not only isn’t built like a supermodel, but loves me, a man who not only has junk in the trunk, but groceries all over the car.

Man took over $400,000 from two New York women

The used car salesman seemed just like the big shot teenager Rose Marie Anglade knew in Haiti.

Paul Francois owned his dealership and property in Miami’s Little Haiti, and he parked a fleet of flashy luxury cars in front of a suburban home worth half a million dollars. “I just need someone to get married to,” he crooned to Anglade when the old acquaintances from Port-au-Prince met again in 2007.

She thought their unexpected reunion was just what she needed: Someone to take care of her, as a single mother with a son in the Army and a daughter fresh out of high school.

Instead, police say, Francois took Anglade for everything she had — while he was swindling another Haitian immigrant he had also promised to marry. He allegedly stole some $400,000 from the two New York women.

Francois, 55, of Davie, was being held Thursday on $125,000 bond at the Broward County jail on fraud and theft charges. A lawsuit Anglade filed against Francois in September 2008 also is pending.

Anglade, 50, was overjoyed to see Francois’ mug shot posted online after his arrest Wednesday. His sweet talk had left her penniless and facing eviction from the Miramar house she had bought with him, she said in a phone interview Thursday.

The dental office assistant from the Astoria section of Queens in New York went to Florida on vacation in 2007 to celebrate her daughter’s graduation. She had left Haiti for New York 30 years earlier, and she wanted to see the cultural heart for Haitians in Miami. A stroll through the neighborhood brought her to Francois’ dealership, and she recognized him instantly.

The pair talked by phone every night after Anglade returned to New York. She soon began flying back to Miami every two weeks to be with Francois.

“He told me, ‘I’m going to marry you, you won’t need to go to work,’ because he had the business,” she said. “It was, ‘Honey, honey, honey,’ every day.”

He persuaded her to sell her home and buy a house in Florida from his brother, who was behind on his mortgage, according to the arrest affidavit. Then they opened a joint account, where she deposited more than $287,000 — her savings plus the proceeds from the sale of her New York home.

When Anglade gave Francois a $17,500 check for the mortgage, he deposited it into his own account and then forged her signature on other checks as he emptied their joint account, police said. Anglade said she didn’t know Francois was stealing from her until she bounced a check in October 2007. The bank informed her that the joint account was overdrawn.

“He told me that he moved the money because he was afraid that I wouldn’t like Florida and would take the money back with me to New York,” Anglade said. “He never denied it.”

Anglade also didn’t know that while she was abandoning her life in New York to join Francois, he was wooing another woman.

“He had one week for me and then one week for her,” Anglade said. “He was engaged to both of us.”

Sheila Brissault of Elmont, N.Y., said she was introduced to Francois by his brother, a New York City cab driver, in June 2007. Brissault told authorities that over the phone, Francois claimed to be a real estate agent and persuaded the nurse from Jacmel, Haiti, to come to Florida with $50,000 for a down payment on a home.

When she visited Florida, Francois allegedly persuaded her to apply for a $50,000 line of credit on her New York home and open a joint account with him.

The 43-year-old Brissault, also a single mother with a daughter graduating high school, said she trusted Francois because he produced the right documents and told her he was looking for a wife.

“He kept talking,” she said by telephone from New York. “I thought I would never get married until my daughter graduated, and when I met this man was exactly when my daughter graduated.”

She discovered she had been swindled after Francois asked her to sell her Long Island home. She didn’t, but he had already cleaned out the joint account, according to the arrest affidavit.

Brissault and Anglade told authorities that Francois threatened them each with violence when they demanded he return their money. Anglade said Francois punched her in the face after one confrontation. Brissault said Francois threatened to kill her and her children.

“He’s nice until he gets the money, then immediately he turns into the werewolf,” said Joe Pappacoda, the attorney representing both women.

Francois’ attorney, Leonard Fenn, did not immediately return phone or e-mail messages Thursday.

Anglade and her 20-year-old daughter still live in their foreclosed Florida home, pawning belongings to pay the bills and relying on handouts for grocery money. Anglade is unemployed, and said Francois intended to leave her homeless with no way to support herself.

He sold cars, but he wouldn’t give her one to look for a job, she said.

“He said he loved me so much, he just didn’t want me to go anywhere by myself, so no car for me,” said Anglade . “He said, ‘Oh, honey, those people in Florida are no good.’ He just didn’t want me to talk to no one so I wouldn’t know what was going on with him.”

Can A Man Wait Until Marriage To Have Sex?

Posted Aug 13

Hello Blackman, I am a 21-year-old African American Christian woman who is saving herself for marriage. Quite frankly, I feel like I am one of the last of a dying breed of excellent women. It seems to be hard to find a good black man who appreciates me for who I am. What man wants to deal with a girl who won’t satisfy his sexual needs until after marriage? CD

The Blackman: Hi CD, I think the way society is designed these days it is tough to find that match. It is not impossible though. Just like anything else, once you find something great you should cherish it. Society has transformed a lot throughout the years where pre-marital sex is not looked at as taboo anymore. In some ways it has helped certain situations and in other cases it has not. For example it has stopped some people from getting married and realizing that lust was the premise of their relationship. On the flip side it has made someone overlook a person that they would overall be compatible with but since pre-marital sex was not in the equation, they looked past the person. The age of when people get married has changed as well.

Nowadays it is common for people to get married in their 30’s, unlike in the past most people were married with children in their 20’s. Sex has become a big emphasis in our society, rather than religion where premarital sex is forbidden. This factor makes it tougher for people to abstain until marriage. A majority of the things that you see in the multimedia platform of our society has a sexual innuendo to it. Another makes it difficult in your case because the men in your age range are going through their sexual prime so they may not be looking to settle at that point of their lives.

Look at yourself as a diamond in the ruff and be open to receiving a gem for a lifetime partner. There are men out there that will respect the fact you want to save yourself for marriage and will see your value beyond sex. Since you are a Christian woman, a good place to look for man who will value that is at Church. That’s not saying that you can’t find men elsewhere that will honor that but they can relate where you are coming from. Be patient and you will find someone that will appreciate you. Good Luck, TBM

Age: 63

I was laid off from my administrative assistant job in 2006, and since then I’ve had only two terrible temp jobs at call centers. At the first, I had to call late-payers to tell them their electricity was being shut off. I left in December 2007. I took another call-center job reconciling health claims, but I was laid off in April 2008.

Last summer, I was diagnosed with cancer; I’m in collections on most of those bills, because I have zero money to pay them. They say I’m in remission now, but I can’t afford to go to the doctor, although I’m supposed to every three months.

Luckily, I worked long enough at that second job to qualify for unemployment — only about $180 a week. I received extensions, but they’re all gone now. I’ve used up all my savings and retirement money. All that’s keeping me afloat is a monthly disability check. I earn a very small amount selling jewelry online and at farmers’ markets, but those end in this area in September.

I’m getting kind of fatalistic at this point. I went from a divorce to cancer to unemployment. I’ve been paying into “the system” for over 45 years, and now that I try to use it just once, it fails me.

I’m writing a fiction novel set in the future. Maybe it’ll be a book someday, and maybe it’s pure escapism. But I need something, anything, to take me away.

We in the Americas must work together, that being said. If anyone has retail management positions in the Pennsylvania area please contact me and I will contact Ms. Ortega.

I have been out of work for about as long.  I did obtain a small retail position for a fraction of my regular salary.  I myself was not able to obtain unemployment benefits because the company lied during the unemployment hearing.  They were more organized having defeated countless claimers and I was not expecting them to deny the the claim.

How have we lived this long..I returned to school as a full time student.  My sons got jobs and we begin to live life very different.  Now, we did have a time when I was not able to keep the electric on.  I was loaned a electric generator which we used for a couple of months..the landlord was completely evil. The house was so cold that we nearly froze to death when we had electric but when the utility company cut the electric we had to sleep in our clothes to keep warm.

When I obtained the part part time position we relocated. Now I am share this because while the country fights over healthcare I pray that people began to realize that this country status affects everyone.  I am a single mother who greatly depends on the support for my children’s fathers, yes fathers(2) LOL.. When they can’t find work then my family gets screwed several times over.

I know that life will not be this difficult for ever but it is one that I can not wait to put behind me.

So I ask you to ponder these things: When the American people are jobless why does the rent go up? Why are the utilities allowed to be increased? Why are the gas prices allowed to be increased when many people are having to make longer commutes in idle traffic which cost them more in regard to the amount of fuel they would normally use to commute to work?  Why doesn’t the local government place a cap on rental cost?

In my humble college town/city of Tallahassee Florida; the rent is ridiculous.  For the apartment that I have now ..the one bedroom is over 600.00 dollars a month..any extras..nope the pool is always closed..the complex itself has numerous water leaks(which the tenants pay for in rental fees) the place is a mess.  However, because college students need places to live and most are from other states their parents must pay the ridiculous rates..What about families? Rent for me is near a 1000.00; we have exhausted all of our savings and are now just trying to relocate again..Now lastly the utilites are extremely high also..so if you can scrape the rent then the utilities will definitely empty your bank account.

Coyfee signing off..but as I leave you think about the above things…

My unemployment benefits ran out

These 5 have been unemployed so long enough they exhausted their unemployment insurance – just like half a million Americans about to face the same fate. How did it happen, and how do they cope without a weekly check?

I was working as a store manager at a women’s retailer called The Pink Turtle before the whole chain shut down. We did everything we could — we cut employees’ hours, slashed pricing — but I was laid off in May 2008 when the store closed.

I figured I’d be out of work for three to six months, max. Early in my career I’d been laid off, and it never lasted longer than that. I applied for unemployment, and I received the maximum $528 a week before taxes.

Soon I realized how tough of a road I had ahead of me. Headhunters were telling me how online job posts receive 1,000 resumes. Another big blow came when my partner, Craig, was laid off from Blue Cross/Blue Shield a few months later. He recently found a job in Lancaster, Pa., so he’s commuting three hours a day.

I think about what would have happened if Craig and I hadn’t moved in together. I probably could have scraped by being single — but if you’re living someplace where cost of living is higher, you’re in a tough bind.

Our savings are exhausted, and it’s going to be very tight for the next 45 days. If I don’t find a job before that, I truly don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m grateful for the checks I’ve received for the past year, but I just wish I could keep getting them somehow.

Police suspect murder-suicide in Arizona family’s death

updated 2:12 p.m. EDT, Fri August 7, 2009

(CNN) — Police in Scottsdale, Arizona, said Friday that they don’t know why a man fatally shot his two young sons and a woman believed to be his wife before turning the gun on himself. The bodies had been in the family’s rental home for several days before they were discovered Thursday afternoon, police spokesman Dave Pubins said in a statement. An out-of-state relative told police that the family had been out of touch and asked them to check the residence, Pubins said.

The father was identified Friday morning as Russell Gilman, 48, and the woman was tentatively identified as his wife, Stacey, Pubins said. He said a definite identification of the woman, thought to be 45 years old, was expected after an autopsy. The boys, who were not named, were ages 3 and 7, Pubins said. A second police spokesman, Mark Clark, told CNN affiliate KNXV-TV that a note and a weapon were found in the home, but he didn’t elaborate.

“They seemed to be very normal people, other than being quiet, no explanation, really,” neighbor Wayne Lehsten said. He added that the four never participated in neighborhood activities like block parties. “They kept to themselves,” he said. “We would greet them once in a while as we saw him take the children to school.” Pubins called the deaths “a tragic event” and said there was nothing to show that anyone outside the home was involved. A neighbor, who identified herself as Carrie, said she saw the commotion and police cars as she drove to her house. “I have children, and that makes me sad,” she told CNN affiliate KTVK-TV3. “This is the kind of a community — these few blocks here — [where] people are very friendly. There are potlucks and Halloween get-togethers, so why couldn’t they reach out to somebody?”

Las Vegas boy, 11, dies after mom’s car gets stuck for days in blistering Death Valley

KEN RITTER Associated Press Writer
6:21 PM CDT, August 7, 2009
LAS VEGAS (AP) — An 11-year-old boy died in the intense heat of Death Valley National Park after he and his mother became stranded in one of the world’s most inhospitable areas and survived for several days on bottled water, Pop-Tarts and cheese sandwiches, authorities said Friday.

Alicia Sanchez, 28, was found severely dehydrated and remained hospitalized in Las Vegas a day after being found with her dog, her dead son and a Jeep Cherokee buried up to its axles in sand.

She told rescuers in California‘s San Bernardino County that her son Carlos died Wednesday, days after she fixed a flat tire and continued into Death Valley, relying on directions from a GPS device in the vehicle.

“It’s in about as remote and isolated an area as you can find,” Death Valley National Park Chief Ranger Brent Pennington told The Associated Press. “How she got to that point, I don’t know.”

Pennington said Sanchez was found by a ranger who followed tire tracks off a dirt road into the Owlshead Mountains near the China Lake Naval Air Station, just inside the southwest corner of the vast national park near the California-Nevada state line. The park covers an area nearly the size of Connecticut.

Summer temperatures commonly run above 120 degrees in Death Valley, with the average daytime August temperature about 113. The high temperature Tuesday and Wednesday was 111, with a low of 96 early Tuesday.

An autopsy on the boy is scheduled for next week, but foul play was not suspected in his death, San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Beavers said.

The family’s pet dachshund survived the ordeal and was being cared for by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies, said Sgt. Tim Lotspeich, a deputy who assisted in the rescue about 20 miles east of the remote town of Trona, Calif. Trona is about 140 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Officials said Sanchez and her son set out last Saturday with a case of 24, 16-ounce bottles of water and food on what was to be an overnight camping trip.

There were conflicting reports about when they became stranded. The San Bernardino County coroner’s office said it was Monday; Pennington and San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said it was last Saturday.

By all accounts, no one reported them missing until Wednesday.

“We got multiple calls about 5 p.m. on Wednesday from family members concerned that they hadn’t heard from her,” Pennington said. “They said they received a text message Aug. 1 that said she was out in the desert changing a flat tire.”

Las Vegas Police Officer Bill Cassell, a department spokesman, would not release a missing persons report. He said investigators checked the woman’s apartment in Las Vegas and began coordinating a search with San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials.

Pennington said an air and ground search was launched at dawn Thursday, and the woman and her son’s body were found about 11 a.m.

He said a park ranger followed tire tracks on a dirt road into the desert, and at one point passed an abandoned tire and rim and water bottle.

The ranger found Sanchez waving for help outside the vehicle, which Pennington said apparently hit an underground animal den and became badly stuck in the sand. The boy’s body was inside the Jeep.

Sanchez was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, about 130 miles east of Trona. Hospital spokeswoman Ashlee Seymour said the woman was in fair condition but could not be interviewed.

Sanchez told authorities she couldn’t get a cell phone signal, and even hiked to the top of a peak to try. Authorities said the pair had no maps and quickly consumed the food and water they brought.

Pennington said cellular service is spotty and global positioning satellite directions can be unreliable on unmaintained roads and open desert in and around Death Valley.

“A GPS does not replace a map, a compass, checking in at the visitor center and letting people know where you’re going to be,” Pennington said.

He said searchers mistakenly looked late Wednesday for Sanchez in campgrounds in the Panamint Mountains, based on family members’ reports that she planned to camp in free sites and visit the Scotty’s Castle attraction in the far northeast corner of the vast national park.

The chief ranger said family members in the Midwest described Alicia Sanchez as a nurse who recently moved to Las Vegas and was working at a Las Vegas hospital. He said she had been due to work Wednesday evening.

Arkeisha PerezThe mother of a 5-year-old girl who was shot accidentally at an Orlando apartment complex has been arrested, police said Wednesday.

Arkeisha Perez, 26, was charged with aggravated child abuse, allowing a minor access to a weapon with injury and unsafe storage of a firearm, police said. Her other children were placed with relatives.

Exactly what happened is unclear. The girl’s father, Jarvis Sims, told reporters that another child may have shot her. That could not be confirmed.

Jazyire Emery Sims, 5, who is in critical condition, was standing near the front door of her mother’s home at Willow Bend Apartments when a bullet pierced her body about 11 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

After the shooting, the girl’s mother and uncle began to drive her to the hospital. But after a few miles, they flagged down an Orange County deputy on Hiawassee Road at Ironwood Drive, police Lt. Darryl Braunskill said.

An ambulance was called to the intersection and took the child to the hospital. She was taken into emergency surgery and was recovering Wednesday at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

When Jazyire is released, she will be placed in a foster home, Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said.

Perez was brought from the hospital to Orlando police headquarters, questioned for two hours and arrested about 4 p.m., police said. She was booked into the Orange County Jail with bail set at $2,700.

Few residents were outside at the complex Wednesday morning. Some men surveyed the door to the apartment where the child was shot, even as large cockroaches crawled on the walls and the pavement nearby.

“It’s too close to home,” said Alnisa Jackson, 22, who lives with her children and their father in the building next door to where the girl was shot. “It’s not safe.”

Jackson’s 3-year-old daughter often played with the injured child.

Another neighbor, Anthony Miles, sat outside his apartment smoking cigarettes. He was home Tuesday night when the police arrived but didn’t hear the gunshot.

“I was at home, and I heard the cops,” Miles said. “Then someone knocked on my door and said the baby’s been shot.”

Miles said the apartment complex is dangerous, and he tries not to go outside at night.

“Right now is the safest time to be outside,” he said. “I’m scared to come outside at night. It’s just a bad neighborhood.”

Investigators are trying to determine how many people were in the apartment when the shooting occurred. Jazyire has three siblings. A judge Wednesday ordered them placed with a relative, Hoeppner said. One of the children was home when Jazyire was shot. The other two were with a family member.

Witnesses at the apartment complex have not provided any leads in the case, Braunskill said.

“We don’t have any suspects,” Braunskill said. “You got people in the apartment complex and something happened. They have to have some sort of idea of what happened or saw what was going on at the apartment.”

He said the lack of cooperation from witnesses is frustrating.

“It hinders us from doing our job and puts the general public at risk,” Braunskill said. “We’ve got one or more subjects that has hit a 5-year-old girl with a bullet, and they are out there running around with a firearm.”

Dog eat your homework? Man claims his cat downloads porn

We once worked with a guy who said he was late to work because his cat peed on his alarm clock and shorted it out.

But we like this cat story better.

Keith R. Griffin, 48, of Jensen Beach has a cat.

And you know what that pussy does?

Downloads porn!

So Griffin says.

But cops weren’t convinced.

Instead, they charged Griffin with 10 counts of possession of child pornography after a detective found more than 1,000 child pornographic images on his computer, reports TCPalm.com.

Griffin gave it a good shot.

He told detectives he would leave his computer on and his cat would jump on the keyboard.

And when he returned there will be strange material downloaded.

Griffin was in Martin County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Maybe the cat is now busy poking friends on Facebook.

This is what we call kitty porn.
